In a world increasingly aware of the importance of environmental sustainability, companies and consumers are growing concerned about contributing to a greener future. In order to help consumers make truly sustainable choices and encourage companies to adopt eco-friendly practices, the European Union (EU) developed a symbol of environmental excellence, the "EU Ecolabel".

The "EU Ecolabel," defined in Regulation (EC) No 66/2010, is a reliable and voluntary labeling system designed to support and promote products that have a lower environmental impact and contribute to sustainable development throughout their entire life cycle. According to ISO 14024, the "EU Ecolabel '' corresponds to a Type 1 eco-label, which means that it is awarded based on multiple criteria by an independent third party that guarantees full compliance. Being the only EU-wide type 1 eco-label so far, the "EU Ecolabel'' has become the largest and best-known labeling scheme in many European countries.

Adoption of the "EU Ecolabel":

  • Ensures that certified products are energy efficient, durable, and repairable, promoting innovation and saving resources;

  • Minimizes the use of harmful chemicals, as well as emissions to air and water.

  • Helps reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

  • Promotes the EU's transition to a circular economy.

Products that adhere to this labeling system meet a set of stringent environmental standards and, therefore, acquire the right to join the "EU Ecolabel" community. Any consumer can easily identify these products due to the presence of the iconic logo: EU flower.

In recent years, the growth of the "EU Ecolabel" community has been remarkable. The current number of licenses awarded for the use of the "EU Ecolabel" is the highest ever recorded. As of March 2024, the number of licenses awarded increased by 6%, and the number of products displaying the "EU Ecolabel" increased by 8%, compared to September 2023. These figures undoubtedly reflect the market's and consumers' growing awareness of environmental issues.

By distinguishing true "green" products, the "EU Ecolabel" provides consumers confidence and security, enabling them to make conscious choices without compromising product quality. On the path to a greener future, the "EU Ecolabel" is a true symbol of sustainable production and consumption.
